This 14-day surface tour through Northern Ethiopia is a deep dive into the heart of Ethiopia’s history, spirituality, and stunning landscapes. Discover ancient cities, dramatic highlands, centuries-old rock-hewn churches, and vibrant cultures. From the bustling capital of Addis Ababa to the mystical ruins of Axum and the mountain-ringed sanctuaries of Lalibela, this journey blends archaeology, architecture, and awe-inspiring nature. Along the way, you’ll meet local communities and explore Ethiopia’s diverse geography, making it a truly immersive experience.
Day 1: Arrival in Addis Ababa
Upon arrival at the airport, you’ll be greeted and transferred to your hotel for check-in. Depending on your arrival time, enjoy a half- or full-day city tour of Addis Ababa. Possible sites include the National Museum (home of Lucy), the Ethnographic Museum, Holy Trinity Cathedral, Mercato (Africa’s largest open-air market), or a scenic drive to Entoto Hills for panoramic views of the city.
Day 2: Addis Ababa – Bahir Dar (553 km)
After an early breakfast, depart for Bahir Dar via a scenic drive through the Ethiopian highlands. You’ll witness rural life and beautiful agricultural landscapes. A highlight of the day is the stunning Blue Nile Gorge. Arrive in Bahir Dar in the late afternoon.
Day 3: Lake Tana & Monasteries
Enjoy a full-day boat excursion on Lake Tana, Ethiopia’s largest lake. Cruise to the source of the Blue Nile, where you may spot hippos and water birds. Continue to the Zege Peninsula and visit the renowned Ura Kidane Mihret Church. Walk through coffee forests and enjoy the peninsula’s peaceful setting, possibly encountering monkeys and exotic birds. Visit Kibran Gabriel Island (men only) and return to Bahir Dar to cap off the day with a sunset from Bezawit Hill.
Day 4: Blue Nile Falls – Gondar
After breakfast, head to Tissisat village to explore the famous Blue Nile Falls. Walk through scenic landscapes and cross a historic 17th-century Portuguese bridge. After a short boat ride, reunite with your vehicle and continue to Gondar, arriving in the afternoon.
Day 5: Gondar – Simien Mountains
Spend the morning exploring Gondar’s imperial past with visits to the Royal Enclosure, Fasilides’ Bath, and the Debre Berhan Selassie Church—famous for its angelic ceiling art. After lunch, drive toward the Simien Mountains, enjoying breathtaking views along the way.
Day 6: Simien Mountains Exploration
Spend a full day exploring the spectacular Simien Mountains National Park. Choose from several scenic hikes or drive to key viewpoints. Spot endemic wildlife such as Gelada monkeys, Walia Ibex, and Ethiopian wolves, along with diverse birdlife.
Day 7: Simien Mountains – Axum
Enjoy a dramatic drive from the Simien Mountains to Axum. Descend the Italian-built Limalimo Road and cross the majestic Tekeze River Gorge. This is one of Ethiopia’s most scenic routes.
Day 8: Axum City Tour
Explore the ancient city of Axum, steeped in legend and history. Visit the famous stelae park, Queen of Sheba’s palace ruins, and the Church of St. Mary of Zion, believed to house the Ark of the Covenant (note: the old church is not accessible to women). Learn about Ethiopia’s early Christian heritage and Axumite civilization.
Day 9: Axum – Mekele (247 km)
Drive through the captivating Tigrayan landscape to Mekele. En route, visit the ancient Temple of Yeha—Ethiopia’s oldest standing structure—and possibly the stunning rock-hewn church of Abreha Atsbeha. Optionally, visit the cliff-top monastery of Debre Damo (men only, accessible by rope ascent).
Day 10: Mekele – Lalibela (335 km)
A long but scenic journey brings you to Lalibela, home to Ethiopia’s most iconic religious monuments. If time allows, you may visit Yemrehane Kristos Church, built in a cave before the rock-hewn churches of Lalibela.
Days 11–12: Explore Lalibela
Spend two days discovering the extraordinary 12th-century rock-hewn churches of Lalibela, dubbed the “New Jerusalem.” These UNESCO World Heritage Sites are still active places of worship. Options include a hike to Asheton Maryam Church or a visit to the bustling Saturday market. For those with more time, nearby monasteries and excellent trekking opportunities await.
Day 13: Lalibela – Kombolcha (316 km)
Begin the return journey via scenic mountain roads to Kombolcha. If traveling on a Saturday, consider extending your trip to attend the famous Bati Market on Monday, one of Ethiopia’s largest and most traditional markets.
Day 14: Kombolcha – Addis Ababa (376 km)
Return to Addis Ababa through the Rift Valley. A hotel day room is available upon arrival. Enjoy a farewell dinner at a traditional cultural restaurant with music and dance from across Ethiopia before your airport transfer for your international departure.
