From the high-altitude grasslands of Sankabar to the breathtaking cliffs of Imet Gogo, this tour offers unforgettable encounters with endemic wildlife like Gelada baboons and Lammergeier vultures, as well as stunning views of jagged peaks, deep valleys, and giant lobelia forests. Ideal for nature lovers and hikers seeking a short but rewarding trek through Ethiopia’s most iconic mountain range.
Day 1: Gondar to Sankabar (via Debark)
Begin the day with an early drive from Gondar to Debark (2–3 hours), the gateway to Simien Mountains National Park. At Debark, park permits will be arranged and an official scout (required for all treks) will join the group. Continue driving to Sankabar (3,250 meters above sea level), the starting point for your trek. Begin trekking from Buyit Ras (Simien Lodge) and walk for approximately 3–4 hours to the Sankabar campsite. Along the way, enjoy spectacular views and spot your first troops of Gelada baboons, an endemic species known for their social behavior and unique appearance.
Day 2: Sankabar to Geech via Jinbar Waterfall
Today’s hike takes you deeper into the heart of the Simien Mountains, covering around 5–7 hours on foot. Depart Sankabar in the morning and trek toward Geech Camp, passing the Jinbar Waterfall, one of the most iconic natural features in the park. Descend into the Jinbar River Valley, cross the stream, and ascend again through scenic highland terrain to reach Geech village and the nearby campsite at 3,600 meters above sea level. The Geech campsite is known for its panoramic mountain views and striking giant lobelia plants. Optional: Hike to Kedadit viewpoint for a spectacular sunset over the escarpments.
Day 3: Geech to Imet Gogo – Ambaras – Gondar
Your final day in the Simien Mountains features one of the most spectacular viewpoints in the region. Trek to the dramatic Imet Gogo viewpoint, known for its 360-degree vistas of the surrounding peaks, valleys, and cliffs. Keep an eye out for Lammergeier vultures, also called “bearded vultures,” soaring above the escarpments. From Imet Gogo, hike back to a nearby access road near the village of Ambaras, where your vehicle will be waiting. Drive back to Gondar, concluding your unforgettable mountain adventure.
